My name is Joseph Grill and I joined crossfit in December of 2010. Before joining crossfit I always would bounce around with my weight. I tried going to the gym, tried getting into running, tried getting into road biking. Nothing would quiet do it for me. The gym got boring fast, sitting in a gym doing rep after rep and having to set aside at least 1.5 hours in a day to work out just wasn't inciting to me. Everything else I tried I enjoyed but they were all short lived and more seasonal then year round. Then I heard about crossfit, checked out a few videos online, got extremely intimidated, and then said I should just go experience it for myself. After the first day I knew it’s exactly what I wanted. The workouts are all progressive and you can fit them into a 45 minute time slot. They are short and hard but they get the job done. In 3 months of crossfit I have seen more results in my health and fitness compared to years of going to a normal gym. After joining crossfit there really isn’t any other way I would rather workout.
1. How long have you been a member at CrossFit Warwick?
I have been going to Crossfit since December of 2010.
2. How did you hear about the gym originally?
I heard about crossfit for the first time when I was bartending at Pennings Farm Market and Katie came in an ordered a cold one and a lowland beef burger. She was wearing a Crossfit Warwick t-shirt and I asked her what it meant. After the conversation I had interest in the workout style and finally after a few months I finally pulled the trigger and joined.
3. What is your favorite lift/movement?
Back squats and jump rope.
4. What is your least favorite lift/movement?
I'm pretty sure it goes without saying, Burpees
5. What has been your biggest achievement since starting at CrossFit Warwick?
Losing over 12#s in the month of February
6. How many days per week do you work out at CrossFit Warwick?
3-5 Times a week, schedule permitting.
7. What movement are you still struggling with and what are you doing to fix it?
Pull-ups/kips, I have been slowly decreasing my assist bands, I’m all the way down to the lightest band and have been trying to focus on the motions.
8. What were your stats, physically, before coming to CrossFit Warwick? Weight?
My overall fitness before crossfit was overweight. For a bigger guy i considered myself pretty athletic, but that perspective has changed greatly looking back
9. How has your nutrition changed?
My nutrition has geared more towards Paleolithic, more lean meats, veggies, some fruit. Have stopped drinking dairy products and eating any gluten and bread products. If so consumed in extreme moderation.
10. What motivates you daily?
Becoming the healthiest / fittest my body is capable of being. Working out for me is a great release of getting negative energy out both mentally and physically. No matter how much you dread a workout or how much you are not looking forward to it, when you finish your WOD you get a sense of accomplishment and a natural high.
11. What advice would you give to someone who might be intimidated by CrossFit Warwick?
I was, that’s why it took me a few months to finally pull the trigger on signing up. I thought i was going to go in there and there was going to be meatheads, pushing extreme weight and that i would look like a weakling and wouldn’t be able to hold my own. CrossFit was the completely opposite, it’s a bunch of everyday normal people who are social, friendly and supportive and are all on the same page as you. All people want out of you is just a little dedication and goal of progression. Were all there for the same gains, to live a healthy lifestyle and feel good about who we are.
